6.28.06 Laguna Beach, California

We spent 4 days last week at San Clemente Island onboard the Vintage fishing with Dave Pfeiffer and Robby Gant of Shimano. Dave met us there in his Contender center console for what turned out to be one of the most incredible trips we’ve ever had.

Pfeif has been fishing the island for years. It’s become his own personal testing grounds for all of Shimano’s new equipment. We even got to fish a couple new reels that’ll be introduced at ICAST early next month. But the bottom line is this. Dave put us on spot after spot of fish that wanted to bite.  I’ve seen flurries when the calicos go off, but never anything like this. Three straight days of wide open fishing. Our average fish were 3 – 4 pounds, with dozens pushing the 6 – 8 pound mark. We averaged over 250 fish per day! Releasing every single one. And it’s all on tape. Shot in stunning 1080i HD I can hardly wait to start cutting these shows together.

Knowing some great whites call SCI home, underwater shooter, Marc Levine, bravely slid into the kelps to get some of the most incredible underwater footage of these big calicos that’s ever been filmed. Robby took a few minutes to walk us through balancing the right gear for fishing both the rubber and iron. Dave hung a few nice fish on the butterfly jigs and a couple times the big yellows exploded inside as well making this a trip I’ll never forget. It’ll be on the air soon.

Also if you missed Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazines Swordfish seminar at the Balboa Yacht Club, you missed one of the most informative offshore seminars ever presented. I think they have a couple more planned this summer, and with the talent they have lined up to speak, you might want to check ‘um out. I learned more about swordfish last night than I’ve managed to learn my entire life.

Remember, we all share one planet, one ocean and have only one chance. Do your part. Make a difference. Practice CPR, Catch, Photograph and Release.

It's been way too long since I posted and I apologize. We switched over all our production equipment to HD the end of last season, and learning the new HD editing suite has just about sent me over the edge. It's been virtually all consuming. For me, it's like trying to learn how to speak Spanish using a French manual, and I don't read French or speak Spanish. The learning curve has been a nightmare. But it's coming. And as I start getting more and more familiar with the system, the new shows are going to keep getting better and better. The HD images, especially the underwater footage, is mind blowing. We have a dozen new shows already shot and waiting to be edited with a dozen more slated to be shot this summer. From lings a few miles of the Long Beach breakwater, to working with Promar on the hoop netting, to free diving on 200 pound tarpon in Key West and fishing the butterfly rigs with Shimano, to some of the most exciting East Cape action we've ever shot, the new shows are coming. Makos and threshers, island trips and paddy hoppin'. they're on their way. I just want to thank you for your patience during this time. For the past 18 years, we've been able to produce and deliver 26 original half-hour programs every year. With Fox running encores of every program a half dozen times, I know it feels like there's been nothing but reruns on and I'm sorry. We've had to up cut a lot of existing shows during this HD transition time. So most of you have probably seen everything we've go more than once. We're doing our best and can't thank you enough for your understanding, patience and continued support. I promise, when the new stuff starts rolling out, I think you're really going to like it. If not, as always, please let us know. Your feedback, constructive criticism, suggestions and ideas have always been the foundation for the series. Inside Sportfishing is your show. Produced by fisherman, for fisherman. So don't ever hesitate to let us know what you'd like to see us try and film in the future. And remember, we're all stewards of the seas. We all share one ocean, and only have one chance. So do you part. Make a difference. Practice CPR.

We couldn’t be prouder being able to offer you a chance to own a piece of history, with our latest DVD release, Black Marlin Boulevard, Cabo Blanco Peru, circa 1954 with Ted Williams. This is truly a collectors’ item. It belongs right up there along with A Tribute to Tuna.

Doug Olander, Editor in Chief, of Sport Fishing magazine, writes, “The waters off a nondescript bluff on the northern Peru coast produced the most remarkable action the world has ever seen for colossal black marlin, abundant swordfish, striped marlin and huge bigeye tuna. No other spot could rival it then: no other spot rivals it now. And it seems increasingly possible that no place ever will.”

The original 16mm color films, provided by the IGFA, have been magnetically cleaned, transferred and digitized, with unbelievable clarity and crispness, preserving forever an all time classic moment in time. Without question this is one of fishing’s most historical moments. Baseball great, Ted Williams introduces us to the Cabo Blanco Fishing Club, before heading off the beach, making bait and doing battle with a black marlin weighing in at over 1,200 pounds. S. Rip Farrington picks up the action where Ted leaves of with more spectacular footage showcasing this great fishery in all its grandeur. Cabo Blanco Peru, circa, 1954 this is one you’ll watch over and over again.

Remember, we are the future of our oceans and fisheries. So do your part. Make a difference. Practice and teach, CPR, Catch, Photograph and Release.

Tight Lines,

Michael Fowlkes
